In 1848 a railroad foreman named Phineas Gage was setting a blast in Vermont. He was trusted with a whole crew. The charge went off early. A tamping iron more than three feet long shot through his cheek, behind his eye, and out the top of his skull.
He lived. He could still walk and talk. But his doctor recorded that the people who knew him said he was "no longer Gage." The man who had governed a crew could no longer govern himself.
Power stayed. Government left.
Something like that happens in the spirit. A believer can carry real anointing while the inner government lies in pieces. And the people you set free can walk right back into the same bondage, because nothing was put in charge of the house.
You know the frustration. You prayed with someone, saw something break off them, and watched them walk out lighter. A few months later they were back in the same fight. The freedom was real, and it did not hold. You may carry that one privately, and maybe you have quietly wondered whether the fault is in your own prayers.
Jesus gave a name to what happened.
